Fine Cut Mower Improves Sward Presentation

7 Apr 2008

The greenkeeping team at Isle of Wedmore Golf Club in Somerset are improving the quality and presentation of their semi-rough following the purchase of a Jacobsen AR5 fine cut rotary mower from local Ransomes Jacobsen dealer, TH White Ltd.

Course Manager Kevin Innals runs a sizeable fleet of machines from the Ipswich-based manufacturer and has now added the AR5 as part of a continuous improvement programme implemented a couple of years ago.

“We get a lot of visiting societies,” he said, “so the quality of the playing surfaces and presentation of the course is very important to us. The five decks on the AR5 are fully articulated, which means they have an excellent range of movement and follow undulating terrain very precisely.”

Steve Munckton, Head Greenkeeper added,
“It’s a well-built machine with a 60hp turbocharged diesel engine, so it has plenty of power, especially for our long back nine. It also has excellent traction so its hill climbing ability is also very good and the rear rollers on each deck will allow us to change our policy and allow us to stripe the semi-rough areas.”

About Isle of Wemore Golf Club

The 18-hole course was opened in 1992 and sits on heavy clay, typical of the Somerset levels. An extensive drainage programme ensures that it is playable on most days of the year. The club has over 600 members and is very popular with societies. Kevin Innals assisted with the construction and the USGA greens are very free draining.

Highlights of the course include three back-to-back par 5s on the back nine totaling almost 1,500 yards, while on a clear day from the 11th tee it is possible to see Glastonbury Tor, Wells Cathedral and across the Bristol Channel into Wales.
