Can-Am built for Scottish Highlands
Can-Am will be highlighting the power, performance, comfort, capability, versatility and innovation of its off-road line-up at the Royal Highland Show 2019.
The event will welcome the Scottish debut of the Can-Am Outlander 6×6 450 T, the latest addition to its 2019 utility vehicle range.
The 2019 Can-Am Outlander 6×6 450 T has been designed and developed to enable users to carry out the toughest jobs on the farm more efficiently and to handle the varying terrains out in the field with ease.
The vehicle is powered by the reliable 38 hp single-cylinder, liquid-cooled Rotax 450 engine and comes with industry-leading towing capacity (1,650 lb/750 kg), front and rear racks with cargo extenders, and LinQ accessory attachment points. Its Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is calibrated to ensure that it always delivers the optimal torque output, no matter where it is or what it is being used for. The engine braking automatically reduces the speed of the ATV when going downhill and the extra low L-gear makes it easier for the rider to manoeuvre the ATV when pulling a trailer or when it is driving in deep mud. In addition, the Visco-Lok system front differential system requires no buttons to push or levers to be held in order to engage it and once the 6×6 option is selected, the system intelligently transfers power from the slipping front wheel to the opposing wheel with traction.
The Can-Am Outlander 6×6 450 T will be joined by Can-Am’s other workhorse agricultural all terrain (ATV) and side by side vehicles (SSV). These models will include the Can-Am Outlander 450 Standard, the Can-Am Outlander 570 PRO, and the tough, capable and clever Can-Am Traxter HD8.
The Outlander 450 Standard is an accessible, very competitively-priced ATV with selectable 2WD/4WD, featuring the rider-friendly Visco-Lok Auto Locking Front Differential. The vehicle is powered by a 38-hp single-cylinder, liquid-cooled Rotax 450 four-stroke engine, which has strong power and performance, while remaining reliable and efficient. Its Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) provides an energetic ride, even in harsh conditions. It also offers the industry’s only independent rear suspension where the rear wheels pivot up and down in a vertical line rather than a more cumbersome butterfly motion, providing more efficiency and reliability. The ATV is designed to offer point-and-shoot handling, optimal traction and efficient transferring of power to the ground. It has five pre-load settings on the shocks and 22cm of suspension travel, enabling it to soak up rough terrain to keep the rider comfortable and planted on the trail. Its steering includes dive-control geometry for better cornering and vehicle-braking dynamics. The Outlander 450 also has a standard rear hitch plate and 590kg towing capacity.
The Outlander 570 PRO over-delivers on performance, enabling riders to pull and tow more easily. Its 48-hp, eight-valve, liquid-cooled SOHC Rotax 570 V-Twin engine offers category-leading power and performance while remaining reliable and efficient. The Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) offers three levels to align with a rider’s preference, offering easy steering assistance to the driver and adapting the level to the vehicle’s speed. At lower speeds, assistance is increased to reduce steering effort, while at higher speeds it is reduced to maximise steering control for the rider. Centreless 30.5cm cast-aluminium wheels reduce the vehicle’s weight and offer improved strength in strategic areas. They are fitted with 66cm Carlisle ACT HD tyres to deliver rugged performance on rough terrain and changing conditions. Like the 450, the vehicle’s Independent Torsional Trailing Arm (TTI) rear suspension is designed to offer point-and-shoot handling, optimal traction and the efficient transferring of power to the ground. With five pre-load settings on the shocks and 22cm of suspension travel, the Outlander 570 PRO soaks up rough terrain to maximise the rider’s comfort and control on the trail.
Can-Am’s Traxter HD8 with Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) is equipped with a workhorse Rotax HD8 V-Twin engine. It delivers 50-hp and 50lb-ft torque to conquer tough tasks, and its automotive-style technology and manufacturing tolerances align with modern pick-up trucks. The SSV’s high-strength, low alloy (HSLA) grade steel delivers a more rigid design constructed to handle the strain of heavy-duty jobs, tested under the Can-Am engineers’ rigorous winter/summer Utility Test Cycle.
The Traxter’s Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) is tuned for utility driving while enjoying the responsiveness required for recreational riding. The DPS improves the steering experience in slow-speed work situations and on more technical terrain. It is designed to offer less assistance at high speeds and more assistance at low speeds.
The Visco-Lok front differential combined with the lockable rear differential of the HD8 offers a four-mode traction system providing multiple choices for varying terrains and tasks. Using a separate front-and-rear toggle switch, users can select between 2×4 open rear differential for tight turning and turf protection, a 2×4 lockable rear for improved 2WD traction, a 4×4 open rear for greater manoeuvrability on rugged terrain, and a 4×4 locked rear for maximum traction. The rear differential is gear-on–gear to the transmission to achieve a better response, avoid maintenance, deliver better efficiency and employ fewer components. The Traxter’s heavy-duty Torsional Trailing A-arms (TTA) are designed specifically for utility and recreational use, offering 25.4cm of travel to provide a smooth ride, whatever the terrain. Its architecture offers optimal comfort and driveability in all conditions due to its camber.
The SSV’s VERSA-PRO bench seat is engineered as a 40/20/40, inspired by modern pick-up trucks. It can comfortably accommodate three adults and features ‘profiled’ corners to improve getting in and out of the cab as well as a sturdy vinyl cover for improved wear resistance. The passenger seats, complete with integrated hooks on their underside, can also be flipped up to improve onboard storage. Can-Am designers also added a foldable central console and armrest with two cup holders to allow more space in the cab.
The vehicle’s open dash features the industry’s only handy, removable, water-resistant 6.3L toolbox allowing users to carry tools and supplies neatly and securely. In addition, it includes 23L if under dash storage with an enclosed pocket, which is ideal for stowing small essentials, providing a total of 39.5L of storage solutions.
The Traxter’s durable multi-function cargo box dumps easily and can carry up to 454kg load capacity. Its 5-gal 18.9 L bucket recesses, integrated anchors on the sidewalls and several tie-down points provide extra convenience. To optimise the cargo box’s usage, drivers can divide it up using the integrated recesses. The box allows for both 1×3 and plywood separators and accepts bed extenders for increasing the bed’s overall dimensions. In addition, the sturdy tailgate can withstand ordinary farm use and serve as a seat during breaks, with a maximum weight of 113kg.
James Dalke, BRP district commercial manager UK, says, “The Can-Am utility range is more than capable of performing reliably at a high level on the tough terrains and heavy-duty conditions presented by the Scottish Highlands. Offering one of the widest ranges of ATV and SSV in the industry, we’re confident users will be able to find the vehicles they require to take on the toughest jobs quickly, easily, efficiently and safely.”
