Affordable + Quality = PROTEA
12 years ago Protea Turf Equipment launched a range of affordable industrial-quality mowers for the demanding South African market. These machines had to be tough, easy to use and maintain, yet capable of the highest quality cut demanded by professional users. They did this by concentrating production costs on the important areas: a simple but strong machine, properly engineered. Unnecessary complexity was eliminated.
This winning formula has rewarded them well, and today they enjoy a significant market share in their home country. In 2005 Nottingham-based Rivendell Projects brought these fine machines to the European market.
So with a starting price of £1,106+VAT, what do you get for your money?
The Greensmower is their best selling machine. It has a 12-blade cylinder, low-cut bottom blade, brush strip and double height cutting adjusters for highly accurate cutting. It is perfect for bowls, cricket and golf clubs, where its performance and easy handling are major factors.
The SI Mower is based on the Greensmower chassis and is available with a choice of 6 or 9-blade cylinders. It has a single height adjuster and standard bottom blade. The 6-blade cylinder is ideal for lawns where species and length of grass may be more varied, whilst the 9-blade is suitable for finer turf such as cricket squares and golf tees.
The Heavy Duty Mower is an almost unburstable 8-blade machine with a dual-drive system and cable-free controls, built to withstand the toughest treatment. It is capable of a very accurate cut which makes it ideal for use on sports fields, cricket squares and large lawns.
The Powered Groomer was launched in response to customer demand and is based on the SI mower chassis. It shares the same handling characteristics, engine, grassbox, controls and drive system. Designed to be used regularly on sports surfaces, it cleans out the sward, removing surface thatch and cutting lateral growth. This is turn allows better access of air, water and nutrients to the plant thereby promoting a healthy, strong and disease-free green. It is a great turf maintenance tool for everyone.
All Protea machines are designed around operator comfort, simple maintenance and set-up, and low whole-life costs. Handles are ultra-low vibration and foldable on the SI range for easy transportation and storage, whilst controls are instinctive and non-tiring to use. Much development has gone into machine balance, which makes handling feel effortless even on the 36” machine. Datatag anti-theft system and the very best Subaru Robin engines are fitted as standard equipment on all machines.
The final part of the equation is customer service: Protea is totally focused on customer satisfaction, and you only need to look at the growing list of impressive testimonials and high-profile customers on the Rivendell website to realise that these machines not only perform very well, but customer service is exemplary. Rivendell sold out twice in 2006 and sales in 2007 are already far exceeding 2006 figures, almost entirely as a result of customer recommendations. Warranty is 2-years parts and labour for mowers, 1-year for Groomers and Rivendell carry a full range of spares at their Nottingham warehouse, which are available next day if required.
Protea go back to basics, concentrating production costs on a strong and accurate machine whilst avoiding unnecessary complexity. Their quick-reaction back-up service and low-cost spares completes the package. If you require a good, honest machine but don’t want to pay small car prices, Protea have the answer.
