Granite Signs Prove The Right Choice For Carnoustie
In less than two years a new company manufacturing golf signage has made a huge impact and literally carved itself a significant portion of the lucrative signage market. Golf Tee Signs is the first company to produce a full range of unique Tee Signs, Entrance, Directional and Course Information signs, exclusively from granite. Even within this very short time span their signs can be found in renowned Golf Courses across the
Carnoustie is one of the 10 oldest clubs in the world. Golf has been played here since the 15th Century. The reputation for the quality of its courses is renowned worldwide and the club was instrumental in creating the United States P.G.A. and the Australian PGA. The crests of these great organisations can be seen incorporated in the club entrance sign. Many of the club members have won professional tournaments, with medals and trophies proudly displayed in the clubhouse. All this reflects a tradition of golfing excellence, which extends to the presentation of the courses.
Colin McLeod is Golf Services Manager for Carnoustie Golf Club and was influential in selecting granite Mow Over Tee markers for the Championship Course. “We will be hosting the Open Championship in 2007 and so Carnoustie will be very much in the public eye. It is our task to ensure that all aspects of the Club are up to championship standard.” Explains Colin “When we considered replacing the tee markers on the Championship Course, there were a number of considerations; appearance, visibility, maintenance and above all durability. Carnoustie is a links course and as such is subjected to extremes of weather and more significantly salt from the sea air, it was very important that the tee markers would be able to handle all weather conditions.
Golf Tee Signs approached Colin with samples of their range of granite products. “We had not seen signage like this before” said Colin. “Previous signs had been zinc plated, but, unfortunately they are not able to withstand the rigours of the Scottish climate. The granite signs offered a completely new approach. They are visually very exciting. The colours are vibrant and the polished granite finish exudes quality. Above all they are impervious to the weather. The committee were very impressed and we decided to go ahead with installing three markers on each tee. 54 are already in position with a further three on order.”
When asked why Golf Tee Signs decided to develop the granite signage business Simon Challoner, Managing Director of Golf Tee Signs is very direct. Granite is a natural product; what better material could you use for external signs. Once the surface has been polished and the information engraved and painted, it will resist corrosion, scratching and discolouration. In fact it will look exactly the same in fifteen years as it did the first day it was put on display.”
Simon continues “There is no more hardwearing a substance to work with than granite. The downside has always been the cost. The company was faced with the very real dilemma of using a potentially expensive material to manufacture bespoke items in a market which already had an accepted pricing structure. However, we have one major advantage over our competitors.” Says Simon “Experience in granite. Our associate company RC Marble has been producing marble and granite products for the domestic market for over 40 years. We have access to all the right suppliers; we know what works and what doesn’t. This leaves us in a very strong position to offer our products at competitive prices without compromising quality in the slightest. This is a very important point. When a golf club invests in signage, this can account for a large part of the budget. When they invest in granite they are buying into a product which will retain its quality of appearance indefinitely. It has already weathered millions of years in the making and unlike other signage materials such as zinc plate or plastic it will not erode.”
