Heroic Gullane GC greenkeeper saves man’s life

Heroic Gullane GC greenkeeper saves man’s life

14 Dec 2021

A greenkeeper at Gullane Golf Club in Scotland saved the life of a golfer who was having a heart attack on the course.

Liam Nicholson has worked at Gullane in East Lothian for over 15 years and earlier this month, he heroically resuscitated a golfer using one of the club’s three defibrillators.

Liam had been trained by the club in first aid and he, his colleagues and the golfer’s playing partners continued treatment until the ambulance arrived at the scene. The golfer was taken to the hospital where he is thankfully said to be recovering well.

“You never know day to day what you’re going to come up against so you’re always ready to be on hand if something ever happens,” Liam said after the incident.

“I was panicking a bit when I went down the road to the incident but when I got there adrenaline kicked in and everything came naturally to me.

“Afterwards I was a bit shaken up but I got a phone call later on at night saying the man was still alive and that my actions had probably saved his life.

“I was a wee bit emotional about it. It’s not every day you save someone’s life.”

Just as the golf club’s statement on Twitter says, this incident shows the importance of having multiple defibrillators on your local golf course.

In this case, it has saved someone’s life and it is also important that green staff like Liam are fully trained on how to use the defibrillators too.
