Major TDR improves social, environmental and operational bottom lines at Ealing Council
Ten miles north of the City, the London Borough of Ealing has a population of 350,000 and is considered one of the ‘greenest’ boroughs in the UK.
With over 1000 hectares of parks, sports and leisure facilities, 25% of its land mass is considered ‘open space.’
Groundcare Maintenance Supervisor, John Carpenter, oversees the maintenance staff teams managing facilities that include sports fields, schools, parks and residential areas.
“Ealing has recently taken the grounds maintenance function back in-house to improve our cost-effectiveness and give our residents best value-for-money,” explained John. “We are increasing the percentage of land given over to wild meadows and attracting a greater proportion of wildlife. We want to do everything we can to improve the environment and therefore the quality of life for residents.”
The London Borough of Ealing invested in three Major 16’ TDR Roller Mowers to maintain sports fields – such as football pitches and cricket squares, as well as parklands, verges and general open spaces that include the taller grass areas and flower-filled meadows.
Added John, “The Major TDR16000 Roller Mower is capable of cutting all the different kinds of turf and parkland. So we don’t need lots of different mowers in our fleet. The mowing duties can include sports turf that we cut at around 30mm – up to the meadowland areas, that is cut at 75mm.”
The blade system on the Major TDR is powered by a robust gear-driven system that ensures, unlike belt driven mowers, the quality of cut is consistent even in heavier conditions. “Not only are we seeing an improvement in the appearance of the grassland but we have found our maintenance and repair costs to be much lower with the Major,” explained John, “which means we get a much better return on investment for our community.”
