Rigby Taylor’s Cold Start Boost R (11-5-5+8Fe+7CaO+0.8MgO) is the most highly regarded ‘true’ cold start fertiliser and can be used in all four corners of the UK from the Cairngorms to Kent and Cornwall to Cambridge.

What sets it apart from other similar analyses is the inclusion of nitrate, which is readily available in colder conditions. Many other “cold start” products, that rely on just Ammonia and Urea have to be converted into plant available nitrate by bacteria and enzymes.

However, research has shown that at temperatures less than 10⁰ it will take a few weeks for this conversion to take place, whereas nitrate is plant available as long as the plant is photosynthesising and the ground isn’t frozen.

The analysis contains iron, which activates enzymes within the plant to enhance cell wall structure and, with the addition of Calcium, the plant has greatly improved disease resistance.
