Landscape Blade Ideal For Unique Historical Cemetery
DMMP Limited, the UK distributor of Maruyama, has been able to help an important cemetery perfect their ground care. The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, three miles west of Cambridge, is over 30 acres and is the final resting place of 3812 US servicemen with a memorial dedicated to those still missing. A change in policy meant that the decision was taken to grow grass right up to the base of each headstone, which resulted in a need to change how the grass was kept neat. Initially, it was trimmed by hand but this was too time-consuming and strimming was ruled out as it would throw debris over adjacent stones creating more work. Thought also had to be given to the safety of visitors.
Les Turner, manager at the cemetery, decided to try the Maruyama Landscape Blade with 26cc multi cutter engine. It has proved such a success; he has ordered another four to enable him to keep up with groundwork quickly. Using the Maruyama Landscape Blade also means that the groundsmen can work near visitors with complete safety which they can’t do with a nylon chord brushcutter.
With precious marble headstones to care for, consideration was also given to prevention of damage. DMMP provided Les’ team with product guards which will enable the users to rub against each stone for a perfect finish to the grass without risking wear to the headstones.
Jacques Shelton, business development manager at DMMP, has been responsible for helping Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial find their perfect cutter: “When I met on site with the grounds team last year, I was very impressed with their commitment to these grounds. They take great pride and work with utmost respect for its historical context and its importance to all visitors. I am very pleased that we were able to supply a product which fulfils their needs so well.”
Les Turner is equally pleased. “The cemetery is open to the public every day from nine until five, except December 25 and January 1 so it is important that we are able to continue our work on the grounds whilst people are nearby. When the cemetery is open to the public, a staff member is on duty in the visitor building to answer questions and escort relatives to grave and memorial sites. We have to keep the grounds looking perfect without closing any areas, causing damage or disrupting visitors’ educational enjoyment or privacy. The Maruyama Landscape Blade has proved an ideal power tool for our unique location.”
